Protect Your Home from Ants with Non-toxic Products
Ants commonly found inside homes include the Argentine ant, the pharaoh ant, the thief or grease ant, the pavement ant and the odorous house ant. If you discover carpenter ants, they will destroy the wood that holds up your house, so get professionals to eliminate these home destroyers.
To keep common ants out of your home, first clean up and remove any food source that may be attracting ants. Put up defensive barriers. A barrier doesn’t need to be wider than a quarter of an inch in an unbroken line. Be clear that some barriers will not work on ants already in your home but they will prevent any more ants from coming in. Some of the items with which to make barriers include:
Powdered charcoal, a line of chalk, turmeric, cayenne pepper or try red chili pepper, white vinegar with water or Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE).
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth can also be used to eliminate ants are already in your home, garage, deck or patio. Diatomaceous Earth is a non-toxic alternative for killing ants and other crawling insects. There is no buildup of tolerance like there is with poisons because the method of killing is physical, not chemical.
Apply the DE powder around cracks and crevices and along any ant trail. To get in narrow, deep, or hard to reach places use a puffer bottle with a crack and crevice applicator or improvise with a plastic mustard/catchup bottle or turkey baster.
Keep dry and leave in place for at least 72 hours. DE can be left indefinitely in any inconspicuous space. You do not need to worry about using Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth, it is not harmful to people, pets or the environment.
