Chickens like to take baths, not in water, but in dust.
Cooped and Backyard chickens should have constant access to a dust box. It’s a natural, non-polluting cleaner.
A dust bath encourages ruffling and preening. Both of these are necessary for healthy chickens. Ruffling dislodges dirt, dander, and feather flakes. Preening releases new oils that spread under the feathers to keep them in good condition and waterproof.
Lumino’s Dusting Bath Powder is a blend of specially selected earth minerals, clay, washed sand, dust, oyster shell powder, and crushed alfalfa meal. This fine loose mix is easily fluffed under the feathers.
Providing bathing facilities couldn’t be easier. A heavy-duty plastic tub with a seal tight lid makes an ideal box. It can be moved around easily, left open on sunny days or moved into the coop during inclement weather. Be sure the box or tub is sturdy, as chickens often perch on the sides waiting for their turn.
If the box is located in the coop, place the chickens’ food at the opposite end of the coop to keep food dust free. For free range chickens, use a box or dig a hole in a sheltered area to keep it dry.
When baby chicks can venture outside they are mature enough for a dust bath.
If you want super clean and happy chickens make sure they have a dust bath. Most chicken owners agree that when their chickens are dusting they make their happiest, most joyful sounds.
